Default Proper Procedure for Loctite Application

Hi Everyone,

I am getting ready to install new driveshafts.

The yokes will be changed, too.

I was advised to use red Loctite when I put the nuts back on.

What is the proper technique for applying Loctite. I have searched Henkel's (i.e. Loctite's manufacturer), and I can't really find an explanation that suits me.

When I applied the Loctite that came with the Spydertrax wheel spacers I applied the red Loctite pretty liberally. (I'm hoping that with some heat I will be able to get them off someday. )

Should I just use a couple of drops? Or maybe run a line across a section of the thread from top to bottom so that there is an area about 1/8" wide and the length of the threaded surface?

Sorry... I'm from the school of "More is Better". I've also been a victim of that way of thinking.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Jeff

You shouldn't have much problem removing anything you put on with the red. Breaker bars are wonderful things and fairly cheap through Northern Tools or Harbor Freight. All you really need wit the Loctite is a drop or so. That should hold things just fine for you.

If it is hard to get off just take an small propane torch for a few seconds to it then got at it the expanding metal should help in breaking the "glue"

Default Thanks Guys

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice.

I had no idea there were so many different types of Loctite.

I have a pretty stout breaker bar that has worked well in the past. Preparing the lift install, I bought a cheater pipe at Home Depot that extended it's length by about double.

I wasn't sure if heat was required to break nuts attached with red, or if it was just a helpful suggestion.

Thanks for the tips.

Jeff

I use the red on my spacers, and have no trouble removing the lugnuts when needed. I don't use too much, but more than a drop.

I usually put about 3 drops on the threads when using red or blue, depending on the nut or bolt diameter.

if you heat loctite with a small torch the glues bond will be broken and the you can easily remove the nut or bolt.
