Default R/E 4.5" Long-Arm & Pittman Arms

Hi,

Would appreciate a reply from those with knowledge of the r/e 4.5" long-arm kit. Just had it installed on my 08 Rubi Unlimited. Main problem so far is having to constantly monitor steering and adjust while driving. Almost like a boat on semi-rough water. The installer's acknowledge the problem and are suggesting pittman arms to resolve it. Does this make sense? I have tried several times to get them to try the standard solutions (toe-in 1/8" for the 35" tires), castor (+6 to +7 degress), center steering wheel and axle. They seem to feel that info. like this from a forum has no validity particulary when it contradicts mfg. info as well as the r/e install guide.

Thanks,

Here is a link to pic's of the front.

You shouldnt need a pitman arm. The kit comes with a new draglink bar instead that installs on top of the knuckle, which does the same thing as a pitman arm being used with the stock draglink. Did your kit not come with the draglink bar? Did the place that installed the kit install the drop bracket along with the front track bar? You need to make sure everything is installed and the track bar and draglink should be parallel with each other, if they're not you'll get bump steer.

Could you take some pics of your steering/track bar setup? Then maybe someone could help you better?

I have the RE LA also, I installed everything but the draglink because I was waiting for my reamer tool to show up so I could install it.
So I drove mine once without the draglink and it had pretty bad bump steer, but once I installed it, its been fine ever since.

Thanks edmontonrader. You are exactly right! I sent the pictures to R/E and they confirmed it. Dealer who installed it is supposed to be talking to R/E right now. What a nightmare! Reported this problem when I picked up my vehicle from them on 4/23. They assured me everything was fine! Brought it back twice and each time they said it was ok. Finally, the last time they mentioned pittman arms which tipped me off they were doing something not right!

Again, thanks for the help!

Yeah, considering the JK only has a pitman ARM (non-plural), I'd say they might not be doing something right.

By the way, is it bumpsteer, drifting, or both?

It's bump steer. The vehicle will suddenly veer or swerve to one side when hitting a bump or dip in the road.

Also, some advice......... I went to 37's and my steering was still a little twitchy with everything the way it was supposed to be installed.......

I put on the new superlift Steering damper with relocation bracket and now I can drive 140 down the highway with no worries what so ever, steering is solid, Stock steering damper just wasn't strong enough, and it is nice to relocate the damper above the tie rod out of harms way.

Good to hear you got it figured out...
Yeah, when I drove mine with the stock draglink still in there, it was pretty scarry going 55mph! As soon as I installed the new draglink per the directions, the problem was gone

BTW, the reamers are not cheap, I paid $60 for mine but it worked really good
