Default Rancho Shock boots

Just installed some Rancho RS900XL shocks and they came with the red shock boot covers, do I need to install these ? Like the looks of the shocks with out them and hear some bad things about using them but as they came with the shocks I though they may indeed be needed ?

Thanks,
Gobs
