Default Re-Gear, Advice

Guys,
I now this question has been asked before many times but I’m a little confused. I have a 2007 4 door jk. It is automatic. I have 33’s with 17X9 wheels. I have a 3in TF suspension lift and a smittybilt bumper with winch. I would like more power on my jeep. I have to keep my foot on the gas to barely get to 60mph in the highway. I have a friend that suggested me to re-gear. My 33s are fairly new so I would keep them while they last, later move to 35s. I have D30 on the front axle and D44 on the rear. I heard 4.88 and 5.13 gears options. I do off roading occasionally. I’would like to go with the 5.13 but I don’t know if it is too much for my 33s. I want a balance between fuel efficiency and power. I also heard that the heated transmission issue is seen when you have 35 or bigger. What you guys recommend?

sounds like 4.88's would be perfect for you. I think 5.13's would top your RPM's out way to high with 33's. Mine is a DD and I went with 4.88's because I wanted something that could give me more power than my stock gears, get me around on the street and freeway for the everyday, and offroading trips during the summer and winter.

I would go 4.88's with your D30. If you had D44's front/rear, I'd say 5.13s...especially being an auto and possibly going to 35s in the future.

IMO, it's better to do it right the first time and not have to spend more money re-doing it in "phase" builds. Depending on how serious you wanna get with the off-road stuff, I'd try to find a rubi D44 take off, get locks front/rear and regear to 5.13s all at the same time...saves money in the long run.

Start in the Drivetrain FAQ's:

Plug some numbers into the RPM chart. Use 'actual' tire heights, not the mfg's listed heights!!

You'll notice that there is very little difference between 4.88's and 5.13's. You have an auto, and you want to move up to 35's, so definitely go with 5.13's. (browse around, you'll find a lot of posts from auto guys saying that they wish they had gone 5.13 instead of 4.88. Doubt you'll find a single one anywhere saying the reverse...)

And you'll be fine running 33's with 5.13's until you upgrade.

Just got my 5.13's and love them. Some day will want 35's so do the regear right the first time.
