Re-gear question
hey all, have a question for you. I've had a set of 5.13 yukon gears and master overhaul kits in my basement waiting to get installed, but I'm actually trading my jeep on this weekend for a new one. My current one had the max toe package with the 3.73 gears so my understanding is I wouldn't have needed and upgraded carrier or anything. The new one doesn't have that, comes with bare bones, what do I need in addition to the overhaul kits and gears I already have for the install and what's that going to run me so I can plan and budget for it?
Look on the window sticker and see what the new one has.
If it has a front d30, and that front d30 has 3.21 gears, then yes it will need a new carrier when going to 3.73 or higher. If the new d30 has 3.73 (or 4.10?), no it will not need a carrier. If you get a rubi with a front d44, it will not need a new carrier.
The cost varies too much for us to guess at what you will pay. Some shops will regear both ends (gears and labor) for about $1000. $1600 or so seems fairly average. Some places on the east coast take advantage of customers and charge up around $3000. Call around to 'your' local shops and compare 'your' local prices, don't gauge it by what people on the other side of the country pay.

Shouldn't be more than $80 or $90 or so for a new open carrier.
Or, if you are considering adding traction, it would be a great time to look into it further. You can get a truetrac for under 400, and you wouldn't need the new carrier.
