Default rear brake problem

I think there is a problem at least. I have been trying to track down a metal on metal sound coming from the rear. This sound is coming from my rear brakes - they are always engaged. Just barely touching, but enough to make a lot of noise.

Might someone suggest a course of action? Or is this expected behavior?

Check the disk backing plate on all corners. I had the right front dragging and I would have bet 100 bucks it was coming from the back.

maybe a dumb question but are you driving when u hear this? Because mine has this noise coming from the rear when it's parked with the e-brake pulled. i found when i put my 35's on that it's coming from from the metal shield behind the disc i just haven't bothered to try an get rid of it yet but probably just build up of dirt and dust.

yeh i had the same noise possibly and it was your brake pads gone with a metal on metal grinding sound... i would check your brake pads and look for any other metal worn spots before driving to much more

I hear the noise while driving. I am quite certain it is the rear - I put the rear on jackstands and can hear it just moving either rear tire. The front does not produce this noise under the same conditions. Also this is just driving not braking.

Could this be the ebrake cable out of adjustment?

My 2009 Liberty sometimes does this. I recently got new brakes and it still sometimes made the noise even after the brake job. It turned out that smalls pebbles and dirt would get caught near the rear brake pads. I'm off road everyday with the vehicle, but anymore I found that stopping and backing up usually dislodges the object and the noise is gone.

If new brakes don't work check the axle shafts. Sometimes they can make that noise.

Worth a shot. I will try that tomorrow on the way to work. Thanks.

This is my company car so instead of trying to fix the issue myself, I just take it to the dealer. They are the ones who diagnosed the problem, but I could clearly see evidence of something (rock) scoring the new rotors they recently installed. It may have been wedged between the caliper/pad and dust sheild.
