Default Rear Drive Shaft movement

Ok ....had my JK on the lift today (09 auto 4 door ) and checked the play in the rear drive shaft. Gearbox was in neutral at the time. There was play front to rear etc about 1 - 2" . Is this to be expected or something that requires further investigation ?

Which end of the drive shaft has the play?

If you mean the yoke/pinion can be moved in and out of the differential case, you need to look into it to see why. It's not supposed to have any movement, be it up and down, side to side, or in and out.

The yoke on the front of the drive shaft isn't supposed to go in and out either.

It happens to be the yoke at the front of the drive shaft.....bugger and bugger again.....just called my shop to order a new shaft.....hopefully fitted this afternoon !
Luckily what highlighted this was having it re-geared otherwise would have been in ignorant bliss for a while till something went bang !

If there is 1-2" of movement on the yoke at the front of the driveshaft then you've got a nut missing somewhere to hold that yoke in place. Certainly not supposed to be any movement there.

So it's the yoke on the front of the drive shaft, and not the yoke on the t-case?

Hi Ron..... this is where I am showing my ignorance here so please bear with me.
The movement appeared to me at the transfer case that is what I meant by the front.....sorry if this caused any confusion and if this alters things in any way .

No problem. I was assuming an aftermarket drive shaft, but you may be talking about movement in the OEM cv joint. Right?
