Default Rear DS double u-joint failure

Anyone had any experience with why BOTH u-joints on the transfer case end of my rear ds would fail? The drive shaft is a Coast 1310

Luckily the issue was caught before any major damage occurred. Curious to see if anyone else has had this happen.

They can fail due to lack of maintenance. They need to be greased every six months and sometimes I do mine every 3 months. A couple squirts of grease and you’re done. When I do mine I use a needle type end to get in to the middle of the u-joint.

X2, as my granpa used to say, "grease is cheaper than parts"
I grease mine every 3-4000 miles

Lack of maintenance isn't what caused these to fail. They were practically brand new. Tonight when we inspected them we could not find a logical reason that would have caused the failure. His caster angle is great, no binding at all during rotation, nothing appeared loose, etc. Any other ideas?

When he picks up some new u-joints from Autozone we are going to inspect the blown ones very carefully when we take them off. There is a good lesson to be learned here. Do like JK Sport did and listen to your Jeep takin to ya. He caught this in time because he listened and checked things out. This could have been A LOT worse. Now all we need to do is get his gears done..

Any chance of posting up a few pics? I'd be curious to see this.

And are you running adapters, or new flanges?

I'll get picks up today, and they are new flanges.

Only thing I can think of that would cause pre-mature failure then is that when the u-joint were installed, a needle bearing was missing or crossed up when the cap was put back on.

The double cardin on the Coast drive shaft is pre assembled when you get it. Unless Coast themselves missed it. I run thiers front and back.

They came with new flanges? Is this a 1350 shaft?

Also the u-joints Coast uses are genuine spicer u-joints .

David..the shaft was a coast 1310, he did have new flanges and the u-joints were the spicer kind. Two of the bearing cups on the cooupler side failed. The bearing cups on the shaft and flange side are still intack. Jk Sport took the shaft off last night after he got home so he may have more info for ya when he gets off work.
