Default Rear Main Seal Leak

I was wondering if there was any advice out there? My 2007, with less than 30,000 miles has a slow rear main seal leak. She did sit for months at a time on occasion in the past couple of years, but is used regularly now. The leak is about a drop a day, very slow. A mechanic told me to put stop leak in it before changing out the seal, but a good friend who might as well be a mechanic said not to do it because on most vehicles it will make you engine worse. Should I try the stop leak or just go ahead and change out the rear main?

i wouldnt use stop leak nor would i ever tell someone to use it either. just replace the seal when you have the time and make sure you install it properly. this way you dont wind up with another leak.

Are you sure it is the rear main seal? The dealer thought mine was leaking on my 2007 and it ended up being the rear of one of my valve covers. I replaced my slave cylinder a year or so ago and people thought it was the rear main seal leaking at first. Just throwing it out.

I have cleaned the rest of the engine and the only place there is a leak is the bottom of the rear main seal. I also checked to see if it may be coming from somewhere else but no joy. Guess I will suck up the cost and get it done.

That's where mine was leaking. I can't remember. Do you have a 6 speed? If so, check the slave cylinder.

Remove the transmission dust cover. That will give you a better view of what's going on round there. It could be upper oil pan just above the dust cover, check pan bolts are torqued to 105 in . I removed mine and lay under with engine running trying to source my drip from same spot.

I'm still trying to figure mine out, it only drips after driving around for some time. Cannot replicate at idle. If it is my rear main I'll probably just leave it as it's not bad enough to justify the cost to fix. Leak started after switching to Mobil 1 5w30 . May put Dino Castro gtx in it next change ,higher mileage as I'm at 100000m.

Did you ever figure out what your leak was? I recently picked up a 2010 JK with the automatic transmission and have this same problem. I swapped the oil pan seal and made a new gasket which alleviated part of the problem but I'm still dripping but only after driving it. Idle and up to temperature seems to have no leak and I'm not finding oil on the inside of the bell housing. Any suggestions would be awesome as I know this is a really old thread and is the only place where anyone has documented the same issue. Best, Ashton
