If you don't find yourself using it all that much, and you can figure out a way to carry it inside securely, a mount that slide into your hitch may be an idea to consider.

i have to agree. i have seen guys use the warn winch hitch carrier/mount and it works well. as it is, it's hard enough to keep a winch mounted up front and on top of a bumper or even recessed below the frame rails a bit clean and in good working order - in the rear and down below, it would constantly be subjected to things like water, mud and salted roads and keeping it clean and in good working order would be that much harder to do. but, maybe that's just me.

All those points are valid, but couldn't you protect it with a neoprene cover like you would a front winch?

Red Rock Fab makes one that is good looking . I am thinking of knocking out holes for rear lights like an LoD rear bumper on either side of the winch fairlead:

possibly, but, unlike up front where the cover keeps things that are coming at it from above or head on like a hood (bugs, rain, dirt), doing something like this will act more like a sock and hold in water, mud an salt. in my opinion, this would be worse than just leaving it exposed to the elements.

thanks for some replies guys. very good points. i think i will look into the hitch thing. now that yall have mentioned that, seems a whole lot better than permanent mount back there. it would not be used alot, just one of those things wehere being pulled from rear would be better in some instances. on that note, i have seen some so called portable winches that can be moved, is that a good idea or stick with permanent mount for front and a rear winch for the hitch that can be taken off and on?
