Default Regear Costs

Hi, been looking into regearing my 6 speed Rubicon to 4.88's. Called a few shops in the Salt Lake City area and am getting quotes of around 1700.00$ or so. Seems somewhat high but idk, maybe not. How labor intensive is this? Is it something I should be looking at paying to have done? I'm fairly well machinically inclined, but it would be my 1st time into a Dana 44. Any thoughts on the time involved? Thanks Jeff.

I"ve seen some places that will do it for 1000 for both axles, gears included. I was quoted about the same as you at a local shop but Rock Krawler over in Albany will do it for 300 per axle plus cost of gears (between 5 and 600)

I think it’s important to get the work done at a shop that has a good reputation (talk with some other who had gear work done there), have done lots of JK gears, use good and complete parts, and offer some kind of warrantee.

I purchased my gears through Dave at Northridge, only $549 shipped for ring & pinion and master overhaul kit.

prices seem to vary from 999 - 2k + ... just make sure you find a place that has done jk gears before... takes some time to do it correct . so i would pay a few extra bucks to have a experienced place do it.. the labor seems to be most of the cost.. but the correct gears make a huge difference..well worth it

I paid 1300 for regear to 4.88 but I live in western ny where the average cost of a house is like $60,000 bucks so stuff costs less here.

I wouldnt do gears if I were u unless u have successfully done them before. Too complicated for weekend mechanics, I wouldnt even trust a regular mechanic to do them. I went to an off road shop.
