Default regearing transmission?

Has anyone tried/considered regearing the transmission (auto in my case) instead of the differentials?

What is the reason to do the diffs instead?

Easier?

More aftermarket support?

FWIW, as a NEWB, I think I could (possibly) get through a diff gear change with some instructions. I don't think I'd be nearly as confident pulling an entire tranny apart to regear it.

Regearing the axles will reduce the load on the transmission in all situations.

Because to re-gear an automatic, you basically need to re-engineer the entire transmission. You would have to have different planetary gear sets, new programming, new valve body., etc. It's just not even close to cost effective compared to differential gears. You'd be better off swapping a tranmission instead of changing the gear ratios. In a manual, you'd have to swap all the gears on the mainshaft and have a coutershaft re-designed. Also not cost effective

Thanks. I'll just slide this into the "not a good idea" column.

I figured there was more to it than just "easier", but I'm not anywhere near mechanically inclined enough to have known.
