Default Replacing a single tire?

I cut a sidewall this weekend on one of my Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 35" tires. My tires have about 20K miles on them and I've been doing five tire rotations. I have a new tire and I'm trying to figure out if I can just add it in or if the full depth tread is going to be an issue?

Thanks!

Why not just quit 5 tire rotation and go to the standard 4 tire? Keep the new one as a spare and once you replace them all with new, buy 3, slap on the spare unused for your fourth and keep one of the used as your spare?

Save some cash in the long run for other Jeep "necessities"...

Put it as the spare and do 4 tire rotations for now. When you replace, replace 4 and start 5 tire rotations again. 5 tire is more economical in the long run. I posted this somewhere else recently.

If you rotate your tires every 3000 or 6000 miles and drive 30,000 miles and for argument we further decide that tires will be replaced at 30k then here's what it will look like.

With a 4 tire rotation you'll have 4 tires with 30k miles that need to be replaced and one new tire.

With a 5 tire rotation you'll have traveled the same 30k miles but will have 5 tires with only 24k miles on each. By the time you need to replace the tires you will have driven 36k miles.

If you compare the cost per mile it favors a 5 tire rotation. Using 35x12.5x17 GY MTR/k at a cost of 343 each.

You purchased 5 tires only rotated 4, drove a total of 30k miles, cost per mile = .0571 you then buy 4 more tires and drive another 30k miles cost per mile = .0457. your average cost per mile was .0514

You purchased 5 tires and rotated 5, drove a total of 36k miles, cost per mile = .0476 you then buy 5 more tires and drive another 36k miles cost per mile = .0476. your average cost per mile was .0476

1. put new tire as spare
2. start doing only a 4 tire rotation
3. If you have another flat this set of tires put new on the same axle as your new spare

or

find a used tire that has about the same amount of ware.

Thanks for the feedback. I pretty much figured that was what I was going to have to do. The new tire is at 19/32. The older tires vary between 9/32 and 12/32.

Four tire rotations suck. Oh well.
