Default Rocker knockers help

I have a few questions that I hope some of you can help me out with about the PSC Rocker Knockers for a 2014 Rubicon X unlimited.

1. I like the textured look of the tubes themselves and a either painted or powder coated insert. I'm thinking line x for the main part. How much did you pay to have yours covered with line x and the inserts painted or powder coated?

2. If you paid to have them installed, how much was it? I was quoted $350 which seems stupid.

3. Do they rub on the tires ever if you have 3" lift and 37s? Reason I ask is my current Mopar enhanced rails rub when I'm fully stuffed on 35s.

I can't help you with the line X question, but the install is not worth $350. I would do it yourself, you only need to drill a couple holes in the pinch seam. And as for rubbing, you shouldn't rub on the rocker mocked, they are made to clear for larger tires.

Shoot man, I'll install them for half that. Just don't question me when it takes less than an hour.

I'd coat them in something easy to touch up. Unless you are getting them for looks and not actually planning to introduce them to rocks.

So I hear you saying they aren't difficult to install, which is what I thought. My only problem is that if I install these I need to do it in Florida while I'm on spring break and I don't have a ton of space to bring a lot of tools. I will be playing in rocks on occasion. What would you suggest that is easy to touch up? Is the Line X idea bad? Should I just use a rattle can to do the inserts? What part of these get banged up the most?

The bottom/side edge and inserts take the most abuse. Inserts I'd paint. Easy touch ups. Mine are powdercoated black with commando green painted inserts. Install is a breeze really, took me maybe 2-2.5 hours. You just need a compact drill and a few wrenches & sockets, plus hex for the inserts.

I made my own rails and had the same question. I went with the roll on Herculiner over a couple of coats of primer. Cheap, easy, and you don't have to take it anywhere to get them done/touched up. It's as thin as Line-X but has more "chunks" in it, if you will. A little rougher texture.

Nothing is going to hold up to rocks. It comes off. The best route is to use something that has good anti-corrosion properties and that you can touch up at home.

So, skip line-x. Powder coating can work, but you'll need to find a place that is high quality and offers a two layer process with the first being something like an epoxy. Powder coat doesn't get into all the small joint areas and those areas will rust.

Shockingly, rattle can works really well. The textured black is nice stuff. Use a good self etching primer. There is also more expensive stuff out there that is pretty tough.

Regardless, take the time to prep the metal. Sand it all with 120-180 grit with an orbital Sander. Clean with a pre-paint type cleaner. Then tack cloth and use latex gloves when touching the metal so you don't get oil from your skin on it.

When you say textured black are you talking about a particular brand like Rustoleum? I have seen the Rustoleum textured black and the Rustoleum Bedliner. Any recommendations on a particular brand?

My Rocker Knockers and bumpers are sitting in the garage waiting for the weather to warm up a bit more so I can coat them. I am going to use Duplicolor bed liner so I can touch them up. If you buy a case of six on Amazon, it comes out to about $7 a can. I also plan to do my hard top with the same stuff.
