Default Rockhard Skidplate Problem

Hey just wanted you guys to know if you have a Rockhard gas tank skidplate on your 4 door, trim the section where it bolts to the gas tank by the rear driveline yoke. This is what happened to me in the Rubicon a couple of weeks ago. As most of you that were there know.

It broke the ear off the drive shaft. What you are looking at is a new rear yoke. Look at the skid plate and you can see where I hit it several times when I articulated.

I have to admit I thought it was just the tires rubbing the rear fender. My bad. Definitely can ruin your day. I guess I'm the only one that didn't know to trim it there. Wanted to share so this doesn't happen to you.

Thanks again to everyone that helped me!!

Oh and BTW Liz if this is in the wrong spot I'm sorry, Just wanted Norcal to see what happened. Thanks Larry

As Dedduc said I had this problem once I added a new Tom Woods driveshaft. It isn't as bad with TW because it uses a rear flange and not a yoke in the rear, so the rubbing was a little further back for me. I did have to replace the zirk fitting in the U-joint so my damage was minimal.

I just removed the skid, used a cutoff wheel to trim away enough to allow clearence, I also adjusted the rear trackbar out to move the axle more to the driverside. No problems since then.

I think the potential is there regardless which driveshaft you use. With the larger rear yoke or flanges when you flex it can make contact. The RH skid takes up about 5/8" of space and it is enough to cause issues, especially if your axle isn't centered.

I have heard of issues with this type of rubbing with other brands of skids as well. In that case it was a 2 door.

Is your rear driveshaft a 1310 or 1350?

I had the same issue. I ground it off. Now it looks like yours but doesn't hit anymore. Wasn't a problem for mine until the lift got bgger than 4"

My wife has Rock Hard, her's doesn't run. She has a 3" lift. She is getting evo double throw downs next week. We'll see if it rubs. If so more grinding......

I have a 1310. Looks like the OP may be a 1350. Not sure with the closeup photo.
