Default Are Rotopax Legal ??

....to be mounted on the tailgate?

I am skimming CFR 49 but I haven't found the pertaining part just yet. I assume also there would be state laws to be checked as well?

Has anyone looked into this? I wouldn't call 2-8 gallons of gasoline extremely dangerous, but it will certainly start a nice little fire.

Thanks.

Interesting. There may only be regulations on the can itself, not about its mounted position. Rotopax meets those regulations. Let us know what you find.

Okay....I don't have an answer yet, but I am working on it. I am not a Lawyer but I am a Mechanical Engineer so I like details.

I assume this has question of legality has 2 parts, 1 Federal Regulations, 2 State Regulations.

Let start with the Federal. Code of Federal Regulations, 49 = Transportation Regs.

Section 172.101 will bring you to the Hazardous Material Table

Page 208 you with find Gasoline with up to 10% Alcohol (ie ethenol)

Column 7 is the Special Provisions:

Special Provision Code 177 says that gasoline for use in internal combustion engines falls in Packaging Group II, this I am still investigating as I believe this is where it will detail how to transport.....

Special Provision Code IB2 confirms that plastic is okay for non-bulk transport

Special Provision Code T8 give the design rules and pressure capacity requirements for the tank (ie no drain plug, single opening etc etc)

Packaging Group II transport requirements falls under Code 173.24, Still reading this one....

Okay I went through a few more levels of CFR -DOT regulations and I can not find anything that would make it illegal to mount them to the tailgate. (State Regs we are all on our own)

You are absolutely responsible for them shifting, falling off, leaking etc etc.

I would only fill them when headed off-road at the last place to get gas to minimize your risk and anyone whom may rear end you.

I would also think this is safest for lifted Jeeps such that the level of impact would need to be quite high to hit the paxs.

Okay FUEL UP!!

Yea I think running Rotopax on you tailgate are pretty low priority for any level of law enforcement.

The DOT thing is interesting, maybe some who knows the manufacture will chime in.

Many vendors state they are dot approved when selling them on their site.

My rotopax is the worst investment I've made to date. I hate how they swell and shrink due to air pressure and heat and cold. Middle of summer they swelled up from air pressure inside that I couldn't get them off mount. The spouts are the worst, they work all of about 10 times before the mechanics of them start to have problems. Don't get me started on what a joke the locking mounts are.
