It might be helpful to know what kind of service your vehicle has seen (DD-only, mild off-road, wild off-road, etc).

There is at least one more thread about this.

Broken Rear Rough Country 2.2 Shocks

I haven't had this problem yet, but I did note that the bushings are pressed against metal of the shock tower at such an angle that they could be damaged.

speaking of shock towers, the nuts that are welded on top in the rear , we stripped out one of them couldn't get the stock bolt back , tried to tap out with tap and drill didn't work out so good so i just went got me a hardened steel bolt that was smaller with some washers and put it thru the nut that was stripped out . seems like its ok, the stock nuts on top are really soft seems like and stripped out real easy to make matters worse they are welded on . went out this morning to autozone picked up a couple bushings for good measure not going to install yet till there is a real need to i think the bushings on the outside of the shock just pealed away hopefully on inside its still cool. really enjoyed wrenching on the jeep but it was allittle harder then i expected took me longer but im almost 50 yrs old you really feeling my age now. will post pics when i get the new muds on

I think it's best to use a rethreading/thread restoring tool, which you do by hand, when you strip out a nut. I've had good luck with that. A tap may try to cut a new path through the threads, creating more of a mess.

Being 58, I know what you mean about mod's being a little harder. I always double the amount of time they say to do the mod. Most of that is because of the awkward angles I have to get to see things--either the bifocals are too low or need to come off or .. you know. It just takes longer to do things at our age!

rough country has sent me out the replacement bushings they did respond to the problem when they promised , it was a pain to reinstall aftermarket bushings but i just wanted to say rough country did as they said they would and did respond with a fix. so i would purchase there products. its hard these days to find a honest company and when you do they should be praised. thanks rough country
ps. use the best possible parts your customers will be willing to pay extra for quality we will remember quality but forget what price we paid

Did you have the metal sleeves in the bottom bushings when this happened?
