I have the XRC 8 Winch and love it, I did opt for the warranty for it. Even if I submurge it in alot of water and it quits working I get a new one for free..

Personally, I'd get the guards first. 9 times out of 10 you'll be with someone that has a winch. Slide off a rock and hit something, no one can help you with that one. That's just my 2 cents.

I haven't heard of any problems with the Smitty and I didn't know RC made winches. If you order a Warn before the end of the month, there's an $80 rebate. I got my M8000 from Northridge for $512 + free shipping - $80 rebate. That's hard to beat!

What type of bumper are you mounting it on? I have the Xrc10 and love it, got it for $399 shipped...

If you are in a place you need a winch you will need the guards more.
