rugged ridge POS
Well, It's my turn to rant.I just spent the better part of two hours trying to install the Rugged Ridge mirror relocation kit on my 07 X and gave up with one side partially done.
Here is what I've had to contend with.
The taper of the factory mirror is larger that the taper in the mounting bracket so it the mirror does not sit flush with the top of the bracket. Even using the longer screw from the factor door mount there is no way that you are going to pull the mirror flush without breaking or srtipping something.
Rugged ridge could fix this two ways. They know they have a fit problem. Why not enlarge the female taper on their bracket. Or provide a trim ring to cover the ugly gap. I am going to use an "o" ring tha may fill the gap and look OK.
Now for the crap that really pissed me off.
The screws that they provided to mount the bracket to the window pillar are the wrong thread pitch. They are also the cheapest junk that you can buy and would be a mass of rust in a short time. Luckily I managed to use the factory screw on the bottom (underside)of the bracket.
The door filler plates were also the wrong thread pitch. The factory bolts would not go into the plates more than a few threads. The cheap 8 mm screws that came with the kit went in.
So I had to go and buy an 8mm X1.25 pitch tap.
After retapping the holes to the factory pitch I went to install the door plate.
The holes in the door plate are not deep enough. The factory screws that we are instructed to use bottom out before the door plate is tight
At this point I called it quits for the night.
I'll have to go back to the hardware store tomorrow and buy some 8mm button head screws that are short enough.
You know for the money that I spent on this damn kit you think Rugged Ridge would just provide SAE grade torx head screws to use instead of going cheap and having us reuse the factory screws.
They should take their head of quality control, give him one of these kits, point him at a JK and say "here! Install it"
I was just about to order their side armor rails. But now I'm not so sure

ive had the same problem installing mine however after about 30 minutes messing with the thing i eventually used the silver bolts provided to mount the door filler plates and the factory bolts (used to mount the mirrors on the door) to attach the mirror to the RR bracket. the fit is not flush like you said but once positiioned right everything fit tight. let me know if there is any thing i can help you with. and good luck.
If you go on RR's website, they have "updated" directions. They basically tell you what you already figured out. I spent about 15 minutes messin with mine before I boxed them up and decided to return them.
I've got the gap that you described. Since I'm only going to run these seasonal, I'm not too worried about the issues. Yeah, they could've fixed the taper, but whatever. I'm happy with them. They'll serve the purpose.
Sorry that it took so long to get back to this thread. This is the first oportunity that I've had to get online.
I completed the RR mirror kit install on Saturday.
I used button head socket screws and black painted washers to bolt on the door plates. They look factory. (I was going to try to get torx head windshield bolts from the Jeep dealer but that would have taken several days for them to come in.)
I'm still not happy with gap. I'm getting some 1/4" "O" ring cord stock from work to try to make a filler.
The brackets and door plates look OK mounted. Rugged Ridge could do a better job with removing the weld splatter before they powder coat. Oh, well.
Thanks for the responses.
Any imput on their side armor would be appreaciated.
Now to fabricate padded door hangers for my garage wall.
