i went with lift and tires myself, after you have the basic recovery stuff. the stock front bumper is fairly limiting, so you can chop it if on a budget. I have $250 in lift/wheel spacers, $1300 in tires, my Rubi does the rocks pretty dang well for a 'stock rig' with coil spacers and tires

Tires and lift are definitely one of the earlier upgrades you want to do, but it's also important to map out where you want to finally end up. Meaning if you eventually want to end up with a bigger suspension lift, probably not a good idea to buy an intermediate suspension lift and opt for a budget boost. If you can avoid two stepping parts of the process you'll be a lot better off, and not have to get into the used parts business.

Keep in mind that with bigger tires you're probably going to want new gears installed as well at some point.
