Default Setup bearings for re gear

Hi guys

I am starting to get the tools and equipment to do a re gear.

I have read countless install write ups. There are subtle differences in the various axle models, which makes it quite confusing.

I have a 2012 JK with. D30 / 44 combo.

I have figured out that the shims on both carriers go on the outside of the bearings, so no need for carrier setup bearings.

On the pinion, I have only found the inner / drive setup bearing available.
For the outer bearing, is the normal bearing a loose enough fit that it can get installed and removed without getting damaged?

I will be installing new bearings and would prefer to use a setup bearing rather than honing out my old bearings. I feel it would give less difference between the setup shimming and final install.

Regards
Paul

Not too many people will be or are able to answer your question. A re-gear ia something that many people, myself included, would not dream of tackling. Its just too involved for your average backyard jeeper 'mechanic'
But if you have the know how and the tools, I wish you luck and I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you.

Paul,

On Dana differentials the bearings are on the INSIDE of the carrier bearings. Set up bearings help on the pinion side too as there are no crush sleeves. You must set bearing preload by getting the correct amount of rotational torque on the pinion nut. Once the depth of the pinion is set & the proper preload on the bearings you ready to install the carrier and set the backlash. It's not that simple on the first few you do, but gets easier as you gain understanding. You should have access to a press! I hope this helps you some.

The '08 JK diff on the bench in front of me has the side shims on the outside of the carrier bearings.

I haven't looked yet, but I'm pretty sure the JK pinion uses a crush sleeve.

I am in the process of doing mine right now here is what I did for set up bearings. I used a bearing splitter and a puller to pull the bearings off in one piece. I then took a dremel and shaved out the inside of those bearings until it would slip on the pinion. You only have to do this once because both D30/44 Pinions are the same size.

I just saw you dont want to hone out the bearings. I am here to tell you I did not have any variation in final when doing this an recommend it.

Hone the old bearing is the best trick I know. That's what people mean when they say a set up bearing. It's not something you buy. You make it.

Hi guys

I have watched that video before. It is a goodie... will watch it again. Thanks.

Thanks for the other inputs.

I have downloaded the Dana Spicer exploded views and the D 30 JK and D 44 JK both have the carrier shims outside of the bearings. They also both use a crusher sleeve for the pinion preload.
