skid plates
Has anyone attemped to make a skid plate like the skid row? I just started, I got the steal for $20 dollars from a steel factory. I had them cut the pieces, know all I have to do is bolt two of them up and weld the third. When All said and done I will have spent $32. This makes me happy that I can actually make something for the jeep. I will post pics when I am done, but it might take a while to weld. I don't have one at home.
I am using 1/8" thick steel. The angles of the pieces welded together will make it a little stronger. I was going to go with 1/4" but the weight is heavy. The one I am working on weighs about 20 lbs. Oh by the way, I am many doing this to protect the automatic disconnect. The skid row doesn't look like it going that far back.
skid row goes to the main brace. 1/8 is awfully thin. unless you keep it in tension, its going to be part of the damage. The gas tank is 1/8 inch thick and its in tension. I have dented the crap out of it. My skid row is thicker and have yet to dent it. I say yet, as it will happen, just a matter of time.
skid row is 1/8" thick steel. I am mounting mine like skid rows. Mine is longer on the bottom piece to protect my electronic sway bar. With all the angles that I am putting it at. It should be stronger than a flat piece of 1/8" thick steel.
3/16" is a decent compromise between 1/4", which is just such a weight penalty, and 1/8", which just dents too easily.
The S-R also includes and EXTRA 3/16" plate across the rear to bolster the exhaust protection...etc.
If using 1/8"....use a lot of bends, and crease lines, and add another 1/8" to it when done, where needed for extra protection/bracing, from the upper side, say just in strips or triangles as appropriate to give it more ridgity....it makes a huge difference.

The skid row offroad front shassis skid plate is not 3/16 and doesn't look like it covers the electronic disconnect. Every web site that sells it says its 1/8,if I'm wrong show me proof. I know the skid plate for the oil pan is 3/16 from skid row but it doesn't cover the disconnect.
