Default Smittybilt Rear Tire Bracket/Carrier

Anyone tried this bracket that mounts on the stock tailgate yet and advertises it can carry up to 37" tire. This isn't the "adapter" bracket, but full replacement for stock carrier:

http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_2001_07.htm

How would this work or be any different than the OEM carrier? I'm no physics major, so looking for some thoughts on this. I am looking for an affordable way to tote a 35" without buying $1000 rear bumper and carrier right now.

My other thought was just to completely remove the OEM carrier, and go "spareless" look, with the spare stowed in the back of my unlimited.

Thanks for the input. It would only be a temporary (but maybe like 1 year) solution for me as well - I just don't have the funds for $1000 swing away after dropping so much on 35s, D44s with lockers, and a bunch of other goodies!

Interested to hear if anyone else has this? And how it provides for less stress on the gate, considering it still mounts where the stocker did. Interested in what these "adjustable arms" really do to "prevent tailgate sag".

Anyone?

it can hold a bigger tire but it does nothing for supporting the hinges on the tail gate....i think a 37 would be a little more than the tailgate can hold

I had a 37 on my stock carrier, then I backed into a tree in my yard and bent the tailgate. I had just got onto my wife for backing her LJ into the same tree. I also had a rachet strap on it to help keep it close to the tailgate. It'll work, just don't back into anything, don't know how long before the tailgate hinges give out though.

Thanks for the inputs fellas - any clue if it would make any sense to use the MBRP tailgate reinforcement kit, along with this... you would think that would make it plenty strong to carry a 35" if people do it completely stock...

That is what member "PCGI" did. He mounted the both the MBRP reinforcement kit along with the tire carrier.

May want to PM him and see if he can chime in as to how it is holding up.

A 37" or even most 35s are too heavy for the hinges on the stock tailgate. Have you seen OR-Fabs tire carrier mount? They are about $500, seem to be well built and cost far less than a rear bumper/tire carrier combo. This solution does require some drilling.

Not sure if OR-Fab is a sponsor or not:

I have seen a couple of threads this carrier on the forum.

I bought one myself... I got it before X-mas.. I do believe that this is a temporary solution for someone who wants to mount their tire on the tailgate til they can buy a rear bumper w/ swing away carrier..

The ORFab is nice, and I have their front bumper... looks like it can be used with stock bumper, even though it shows ORFab rear on the QT pic...

Ill probably get something like this eventually as I am fine with the rear bumper until I bang it up or something...
