Dan- I only ask because I've got a 10k smitty now after being thoroughly satisfied with my used 10k smitty that died. It did die but I have no idea what the PO put it through and I didn't do the recommended monthly spooling. It didn't leave me stranded though.....nor has my new one.

$150 for the first used one and $400 for the second new one. Sure, the paint flakes but a call to smitty on parts and they'll gladly ship out new parts for free. The math just doesn't add up for me.

I'll add this- I had warn locking hubs in the past that failed, so obviously no product is 100%.

All that being said, I still invite muddr1 to show us the fatal flaw in the smitty winch that should prevent anyone else from using one.

Totally understand and Smitty winches do their job well for most including myself. My winch is rarely used maybe 3 to 5 times yearly and if I was constantly going to use a winch I probably would have gone "Warn" because they are on top of the winch game.

I would also look at the 10,500 lb. Recon winch on ebay with syn. Line for around 500.00 shipped, if i remember

I went with the Smitty XRC10 COMP and have put it through its paces. No issues whatsoever on at least 15 - 20 legit pulls. I use a snatch block every time if i have enough line.

Have the SmittyBilt 8k and pleased. Not sure where you are getting your price, but picked mine up at 4WP for $299. Yeah it's made in China, but fits my budget. I have a JKU, and with a snatch block in my winch bag I doubt I'll run into a situation I can't winch out of.

He is comparing the waterproof 'competition' style, that's why the price is higher.

I have an old warm m8000 that I bought from a crazy farmer for 125 bucks, no telling how old it is or how much it has been used but I can count on it to pull my JKU through anything. It always works when I need it too.

Save your pennies for the Smittybilt 10,000lb winch. It uses stronger internals.

I have the smitty xrc8000 put it to use many times, it's been submerged in water a few times. It's never failed me so far. I've been having it for about two years
