soft top in winter

Exactly. If you like/want to run the soft top but are worried about premature wear in salt, keep it as clean as possible in winter (touchless car wash weekly). If, in many years, the whole top is really starting to wear, just get a brand new OEM soft top. It will still be a lot cheaper than a hard top, or maintaining two tops, and you will have a brand new top for another long time.
I have never had problems with my plastic windows even on the coldest days we have had here in WI. I frequently open and close the rear soft top window (weekly for sure) and have never had a problem with window cracking. For that matter.....my 81 CJ5 has never had a soft top problem either, and that has sat outside for almost 17 years now with the same top.
Just someone else stated, just keep them clean and take care of it
