This is the gusset(in red). It's welded in between the axle housing(long tube) and the end forging(also known as the "C").

It keeps the "C" from being bent in towards the housing.
Is your sway bar link supposed to look like that. Looks a little bent

You could consider a come-along instead of a winch and save some cash, they come in handy for other stuff too.

Here is anther option for a oil skid.
http://www.gorancho.com/jkrockgear/oilpan.php

It retails around $110.00 bucks, and it does a great job of protecting the oil pan.
Good luck in your build, lots of great info being posted up.

Looking at the link \ picture, is the Oil Pan Protection RS6208 mounted with bailing wire?

no, the skid is adhered to the pan with an RTV adhesive. the chain you see is totally unnecessary but provided anyway as a safety precaution.

with the exception of a means to protect your oil pan, aftermarket skids are definitely NOT needed. we still run stock skids on both our JK's and if you've ever seen our trail pics or youtube videos, you'll know what kind of punishment our JK's see on a regular basis.

I also must say I have learned much from this Forum - and now from this thread; the 'C' gusset was new.

What I did was went with the Ranchero Diff covers, control arm and oil pan skids + a evap skid - I wheel on very rocky trails, and just wanted some peace of mind - IMO it was worth it!

But I don't think you need to get any other skid protection than what you already have.
Except for diff covers and evap skid?

This was a great newbie question thread. I got everything I needed answered. I think I'm going to put a new skid on the oil pan just as to not puncture thru...my jeep already burns enough oil as it is. No need to get leaks. Haha
