Default Spare tire locking questions

So I'm picking up my new Rubi tomorrow and would like to keep the spare tireas secure as possible as it will not be my daily driver. I've seen people use a cable and a masterlock as well as wheel locks...is there anything else out there though? Maybe both of those along with a spare tire cover? How secure would the cable be anyway? I mean, what can you wrap it around that will help secure it?

Thanks!

I think you about covered it. Most just buy some locking lug nuts that need a special key.

I have the LoD bumper / carrier and i used 3 lock lugs. A smart thief could get the whole shabang off pretty easy though if he were smart. I really need to find a way to lock the latch handle shut. That would make them think a little more anyway.

I bought the MOPAR locking lugs just to be safe. They come in a set of 5 so I have one on each wheel. Just make sure you carry the "key" in the Jeep at all times. Nothing sucks more than not being able to change a flat because you left the key at home.

Smart to do both. Get a pair of vice grips and try taking off your locking lug nut without the key.

FYI, if you have a set of factory locks you may be able to go to a dealer to get the correct key if you loose yours (of course this doesn't help if you're on the road with a flat, which is probably when you will figure our you lost it).

I bought a used Lexus for my wife w/no lug key. Went by the dealer & the tech walks out with a tray of about 20 keys & just went through them until he found the right one.

Think I might be able to contribute here - I got my spare stolen last week. My '08 was parked on the street overnight, and all my previous vehicles have come with wheel locks, so it never occurred to me that I'd have to buy a set myself...till I came out from my apartment and said, "Who the hell drives their Jeep around with no spare...oh, *$^%." They left the lug nuts and everything inside the cab - i.e., my stock radio and 6-year-old map of Los Angeles.

That's probably how you or I would do things, but not MOPAR. I went to my dealer to pick up a set of locks and the guy working the counter said, "Just to let you know, if you lose the key we can't order a replacement. They'd have to be chiseled off, and it damages the rim about 80% of the time." I questioned his sales acumen, but appreciated his honesty. Needless to say I didn't buy the MOPAR locks.

If you go aftermarket most of them do keep a set of masters and you can order a replacement. My last car had a set from McGard: http://www.mcgard.com/Applications/A...WGe5tqEw%3d%3d

FYI - I had numbskull techs break a McGard lock on my old car and the remnants were removed without hurting the wheel. So I think you can remove them without hurting the rim, but don't know what the breakage says for McGard's durability.

Gorilla makes a set you can buy at Quadratec. The only thing I don't like is that they look like regular lug nuts (no pattern on the top), so I think it'd be possible for someone to still attempt stealing your wheel. Not that they'd be able to get it, I just don't want anyone touching my Jeep, and who knows what else they'll try to take instead.
