Default Staying "Fast"

With Christmas coming up, I'm going to be doing a lot of highway driving to be with the fam. That said, with my stock 3.73 gears and 34" tires, anything over 65 mph means my auto dropping a gear and staying there, obviously worse gas mileage.

I'm not looking for opinions on whether you would drive faster than 70 or not. I'd just like to know if gearing up would help me keep speed on the freeway. Maybe 4.88s or 5.13s. I've tried searching for some time now and haven't found anything useful on this specific topic.

If you re-geared, it would be better. Your RPMS will likely be at a better number. You'll be able to keep up well with 70 mph. Since you have 34s, i would say go with 5.13s. That way you have some room if you wanted to go up a tire size or two.

You have an auto, correct?

Just a thought.....Like you said, Christmas is on the way and money can get tight. Many folks are going to the Superchips flaspaq and are getting enough improvement in performance that they feel the regear is not that important.....at least for the time being. It is no way like getting new gears, but for far less price it does make a lot of people happy. Like I said.....just a thought.

I'm running 35"s with an auto and 5.13s, I wanted to be able to tow a small trailer in the mountains and I may go with 37s when these are worn out. Love the combo so far.

Why is overdrive that important? If you regear, then the overdrive gear does what, becomes a 1/1 gear? So, you gain an extra gear. But nothing really changes in the grand scheme of things. Except that you roll out better from a stop. If hard starting is the issue, then go for it. Otherwise, just turn the overdrive off. You don't need it.
