When Alloy/Synergy (same design) were pretty much the only affordable HD BJ option, that is what everyone went with. After very poor experience with a few sets of Synergy BJs I moved on. I went to DT BJs and I will never suggest them to anyone, and then you have even pricier Rare Parts which are the best you can buy for the D30/44 axles IMO. In the meantime Teraflex came out with their BJs. After a year or so they tweaked the design. Seems like several over the last couple years have tried them and the only complaint that I can recall was the grease zerks on the lowers which I believe was corrected with the redesign. If I was in the market for mid-level BJs right now, TF is what I think I'd choose. I'm not huge TF fan, but there is a short list of items that they have good options...BJs, SS, and tire carrier.

As far as knurls, if you can get those from your buddy for cheap I don't see an issue with it. I pressed in a knurled version of the DTs thinking I needed em when I really didn't (long story). Obviously will be a touch harder to press em in. Once they are in nbd. Should you ever have to address BJs again, just buy another knurled version, nbd. That's my opinion at least, which is worth about nothing.
