Default Steering Bind

Recently and intermittently, when the Jeep is at low speeds, 2-3 mph, and I turn the wheel, it binds for a few seconds and then breaks free as I continue my turn.

Any ideas?...steering box?, sector shaft?, all of the above? I do have a Drag Link flip that has a torn boot, but I keep it greased. Could that b causing the bind?

Any ideas on how to diagnose where the issues is originating. Hate to pay dealer if it is something I can diagnose and fix myself.

At that speed I have to ask if you are in 4 wheel drive. If so that is your u joint binding as it rotates which is normal. Tough on it but normal. That is one of the reasons we are paying big bucks for the RCV axles. Hope that helps...

Not in 4WD when binding occurs. Wonder if power steering component could b culprit?

Default Steering bind at slow speeds

I too am having the binding issue described above. I was able to replicate it when descending a hill or slight incline. (coming out of my parking garage) That led me to believe it was a power steering fluid level issue, maybe just low enough to cause the fluid to shift forward and starve the pump for a few seconds.

It's at the dealer since Thursday 6/17, and I fear they are going to come back with a "not able to replicate" on the service order.

The dealer said they have seen some of the steering units go out, but she wasn't clear on what component. When I asked again they said they saw this on the Liberty. I know not very helpful post, but please let me know if you discover something.

I also have a loud pop in the steering when I first engage 4 low, and make a left or right turn. It happens, but it doesn't do it again, unless I take it out of 4lo and re-engage.
They are trying to say it's normal, then they said it was my lift.

It only does it in 4lo, and I know there are more components moving/engaged. I'm 99% certain it has nothing to do with the lift.

I have a similar problem. It only occurs when I am pulling into a parking space. Someone suggested that it could be the ESP kicking in. I did some testing by whipping it into a parking space (Empty lot of course) and sure enough, my steering wheel would fight back and ESP would kick in.

Try doing some fast sharp turns into a parking space and see what happens.
