Default Steering Wheel Shake

I have a 2012 JK with a 4" Skyjacker lift and 34.5" (315/70/17) tires. I currently have 20,000 miles on it.

For the last 4000 miles the steering wheel shakes back and forth at low speeds, from the 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock poistion. The jeep drives straight and tracks well even with the shake. The shake only occurs from 0 - about 40 mph. Beyond that it drives normal.

I have searched threads about death wobble etc.. but it does not seem to be the case since the truck is still driving straight.

Any thoughts on where to look? Thank you for the help.

That sounds like a balancing issue. You may have knocked one or more of the weights off after hitting a pothole or something else.

Teke, first things first. Do the easy and cheapest first. Tires, are the pressures right? Does it appear you've lost any weights used to balance the wheels? Have someone track along side of you, do the wheels appear to be balanced correctly? Then, jack it up...any excessive play on the wheels? This could be bearings, could be ball joints. With it jacked up, rock the wheels up and down and side to side while watching ball joints. Is there any extra play? Move on to tie rod. Have you wheeled recently? If so, did you bang the tie rod? If there is even a slight bend in it this will cause increased toe in, and it will vibration/shimmy. Have someone then help you cycle the steering back and forth. Watch the drag link, again, is there any extra play at the knuckle. Then work your way up to the pittman arm. Any play here? No cost to doing any of this, and very likely one of these is your culprit.

Thank you for the responses, I will start with those items and report back. I would not think anything is bent or damaged, since I have not even had it in 4wd yet or off the pavement really.

In that case I'd think wheels/tires/pressures/balance.

Maybe Ryan. I guess if you get up enough speed you don't notice an out of balance wheel as much as you do at lower speeds. We'll see.

With that size tire you could have a bent C. Not sure if it would cause what you describe. Could also have worn out your ball joints more quickly. Even if never offroad.

Sent from some string and a few tin cans.

I have the exact same thing, in my situation it is my balljoints. Going to replace them with synergys this weekend.
