Default Storage in 2 door jk for road trip

I'm planning some road trips with my wife and 2 boys 5 and 8 in our 2 door jk to do some wheelin. Likely to Colorado or Moab from Chicago. Could really be anywhere but it will be a long drive where ever it is.

Of course storage is an issue. What are the best options for bringing our stuff. Besides pack light. I'd like to stay with my soft top as I will want to go topless on the trail although I also have a hardtop.

Suggestions?

When I had a two door had a gobi roof rack and I also used a cargo carrier that fit in the hitch receiver. Or you could go with a trailer. Just depends on the how much money you want to spend.

Cargo carrier is a great idea.

$60 for a hitch basket at Walmart. Holds about 300-400 lbs.

I use the Warrior Products hitch carrier, specifically the one that rises up and sits directly behind your spare. It allows you to wheel with it on and not hit everything you are rolling over.

I agree with the hitch basket. Is your 5 year old in a booster seat still? You can use the space below his feet as well to hold things.

Towing a small trailer is your best bet.

You need to have your trail gear stowed in the Jeep (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, tow ropes, tools, spare parts, cooler, snacks, tire plugs, etc.) The small trailer can be used to haul the extra clothes and stuff need on an extended road trip. Drop the trailer & lock it up in the motel parking lot when you go wheelin'.

I have a two door and took out my rear seat and I have hardly enough room for my trail gear let alone extra clothes and stuff for an extended trip with a family.
