Default Suggestion/Opinions needed for first major Mod

Newbie Jeep owner here. 2011 JKU Rubicon. Met with my local recommended 4x4 mechanic and here's what he suggested for lift & tires (performance/quality/look) for majority (recreational 3rd vehicle) on-road with occasional off-road in moderate conditions (nothing hard-core, yet):
  • 3.25" Rusty's basic lift
  • Toyo open country M/T 35x12.5x17
  • ProComp "Flat black" series rims (ie. 7031, 7032)
I like my stock rims, but I understood that the after-market rims accommodated the tires better, off setting them from the inside without the need for spacers? In addition, he suggested changing the stock muffler to a magnaflow & relocating it to a space more forward on the right side. This to improve performance & do away with the silver stock muffler in the rear. Not really sure what to do about the spare (leave what I have & cover it or get the same setup for the spare) or if I need some kind of an adaptor to accommodate the 5th tire with my factory carrier & bumper. New bumpers & tire carrier was something I was planning for a later time. I guess with the larger tires I'll have to have the speedometer adjusted & consider a re-gear? Just looking for opinions/thoughts/suggestions from more experienced owners. Also, pics if anyone has the same or similar setup (I've already started to search the forum). Many thanks, in advance!

I like your plan. You'll want to do the full sized spare, bumper/tire carrier, and re-gear. An AEV ProCal will fix your speedo if you don't want to go for a tuner.

If $/time is an issue, do gears and tire carrier before the lift and tires. I'm a big fan of doing "supporting mods" in advance.

I would look into different lifts. My buddy had a rusty's on his Jeep with many issues and finally went to a rock krawler lift. I prefer clayton offroad. I have had zero issues with my lift. They have a 3.5 basic lift also. You could get a rusty's with no issues at all. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your input! Suggestions for a rear bumper/tire carrier?

There are tons of them out there. I went with a cheap Rancho. I'm pretty happy with it, really. And if my slackass neighbor will make me the corner protection he's been promising, I'll like it even better.

Very similar to what I did. I went with the 2.5" Rock Krawler Kit, 35" tires, flat black Liquid Metal Gatlin wheels, and a Superchips Flashpaq. Do not forget about the little things you need... I also purchased new TeraFlex bumpstops, Crown Extended Brake Lines, and a 1/2"'spacer in the front to prevent sagging when I add a winch and bumper. The brake lines are expensive, but the bumpstops and spacer are cheap.

Here is a poser pic the morning after the install.

Also, for my second round of mods I went with a Poison Spyder Evap Skid, ACE Rock Rails, and an Or-Fab tire carrier. I chose not to re-gear yet because my 4.10's are fine and I went with the Or-Fab because it is compatible with the stock rear bumper.

Good Luck!

Looks Great! What kind of tires are those?
