Thinking about getting one. I have heard that the jeep will ping for a wile then go away. Thats doesn't make sense to me. Can someone shed some light on this for me please.
From what I can tell, it takes a little while for the knock sensors to "learn" the new programming and correct the pinging. The same thing will happen if a dealer flashes your Jeep with an updated stock program. It may not be as pronounced with an updated stock program because the timing and such are not as aggressive with the factory tune. I've had my computer reflashed by the dealer and experienced some pinging for a little while afterward. I recently bought a Flashpaq and just got through my first tank on the new tune today and my pinging seems to be gone.

I never had a pinging issue, and I run "Tow" mode and run 87 Octane. Never had it in any of the modes, and I tested them all out.
for the record, the Crawl mode is not worth the trouble, and you have to change it back before trying to scramble across the desert. The "tow" mode give the best grunt off the line, and over all a great mode even in the mountains.
Like I said, never had a pinging issue and i drive it hard.

I ran the Tow Tune with 87 Octane for a while not with intent but rather stupidity. Reading is fundamental, as I like to say. I didn't experience any pre-ignition and later was informed that it required 91 or better octane. Although I didn't have issues, the engine clearly did smooth out with the higher octane fuel and the tow tune and I would stay away from using a lower than prescribed octane unless your at high elevations.
