Default Superchips downsides...

So, I've been reading a lot about these superchips and have mostly heard very good reviews. Most people state have found more power as well as better mpg. I'm wondering, what is the downside? I mean, Chrysler curved the windshield, the body panels and even slanted the grill to make the brick slightly less brick like for mpg gains. If they could've easily reprogrammed to gain 10-20% more mpg's, I'm sure they would have...

I imagine that there has got to be something that is wearing quicker internally or something. Any thoughts?

Either way, I like what I have heard.

The manufacturers are tuning more to reduce certain pollutants, rather than the best performance/mileage. At best, it's a compromise among all the factors.
When you change the tune for more performance, (which usually means slightly better mileage, if you keep your foot out of it), the vehicle makes a little more of some pollutants.
Now, I'm not saying it goes beyond legal limits. It's just not quite the low number the manufacturer wants in their pollution account.

And I'm sure it puts more wear on the engine since you'll be flooring it everywhere. But that really is more driver error

I wouldn't bet on it the manufactures do not care about the mpg or we'd all get better.

10-20% is more than you're likely to get with any programer unless your very fortunant the difference in performance and economy will be slight.

That said I have a Superchip and love it. It makes my jeep more fun to drive.

only downside i have found is actually burning a little more gas becasue its new and im still playing with the different tunes so ocassionally ill get on the skinny pedal a little more than i usually do becasue it feels so much better with the flashpaq. since getting it, it makes my 4:10's with the 35's tolerable! but im still gettin gears

Just installed mine yesterday to go with 35's and 4:10 gears and it made it drive like it did with the stock tires at speeds 0-50 but above 55 on the interstate I feel it still searching for gears and downshifting but it is definitely noticeably better in stop and go around town...may get gears eventually but I don't feel it's necessary right now
