Default Superior Gears

If you plan to put Superior 5.13 gears in your 08 JK Unlimited X be fore warned you will need more than just the ring & pinion. You will also need a carrier for the front. Not that expensive if they let you know up front. I was told I only needed the gear kit (ring & pinions) and install kits. Had to figure out on our own we needed the carrier. Cost to figure this out on our own, $ 250.00 extra and three weeks without the use of my Jeep. Not to mention the "PIA". I'm still trying to find out which carrier they had to use.
Do you think I should ask the dealer to share in some of the extra cost or eat it ?

I would think that superior would be the one that should have to release this information. If you ordered it for an 08, it is their job to make sure it works for an 08. There should be some sort of "warning" slip in the box, which im sure they will add in the near future after all these problems.

This was true for my '07 too. It only cost me about $50 extra though and a few hours of the installer scratching his head. I got lucky. He didn't charge me any extra labor though.

It is Jeeps fault actually.

They made so many changes to these things it is hard to tell what you need until you take it apart.

Rubicons will not need anything except gears and install kits.

Thanks for chiming in David, maybe you can clarify which carrier they are using. I agree Jeep is not helping with all the changes. haha ... I think I will call the Dealer and tell them I think they owe me some money, it'll give em something to talk about for the next few days. A few may even find the humor in it.

Actually, I believe the point at which you need a new carrier, in a D-30, has always been when moving from 3.73, and below, to anything above 3.73. When I put 4.56 in my 89 YJ D-30 I had to get a new carrier, (I knew this ahead of time). I got a doner from a slavage yard Chrokee that had 4.10's. The easy way to spot them is to look for Chreokees or YJ's w/ 4 cyl engines and high pinion axles. The 4 cyl's came with either 3.73 or 4.10's
I don't know for sure if this would work with the newer JK D-30. But, when I'm ready to re-gear, once again I will look for a doner D-30 carrier from a salvage yard

I called David at Northridge because I got worried I orderd my 5.13's and they said no about the carrier but u made me 2nd guess the peeps I got them from. If your jeep came with the 4.10's then ur good w/o a new carrier.

I think 3.73's are the lowest gears you can get in an 08 X, even with the tow package... I may be wrong.

the Jk's alot different when it comes to carriers.

Like Dave explained they had it all figured out until Jeep changes the plans
