I'm rockin the superwinch epi9 synthetic, no problems at all. You can always get a synthetic rope later, but don't mix your snatch block and hawse between steel and synthetic. Once either of those items are used on a steel winch line, they should only be used on steel winch lines.

I paid ~800 for mine with a synthetic, so $500 is a good to me. Shop around some, look for shipping charges (winches are heavy). Warn was selling M8000's for around $525 this summer, so there's competition in that range of winches. There are many good vendors like Quadratec and Northridge that can help you buy.
I don't know anyone running a Recon. The bulk of the guys I wheel with run Warns, then Superwinch close behind. That's pretty much it.

It is a great winch but this model has been discontinued. Therefore parts may be limited for it in the future. This is why I opted for a Talon instead. But for that price I would jump on it. It is a very solid winch with great reviews

I ahve an EPI 9.0s that I bought about 2 months ago. The model is discontiued, but Superwinch assured me that the warranty and parts would be available should I ever need them. i bought the last one that I could find anywhere. paid $650 for it. identical to the one you are looking at, just add a Viking line and they are the same. Jump on it. Made in the USA, not China.

Did the same. Bought the EPi9.0 cheap on Amazon ~$500 and added viking winch line to it a few months later. All and all, great setup, been running it for almost two years now no issue.

As mentioned before, if you go synthetic line, hawse fairlead (or the rubber roller replacements for the roller fairlead), new snatch block (if you've used yours with steel line) and highly recommend a winch cover to keep the UV off the winchline when spooled. They extra $30 for the cover will save your expensive line from getting brittle and having to cut/splice later.
