Default Swing away tire carriers?

I'm quite sure there is a perfectly good explanation for custom tire carriers. I'm wondering if this is something you're supposed to do if the spare is too heavy for the stock carrier. If so, how big/heavy a tire is acceptable? I have a 35" mounted on my stock one. If it's just for a cool mod, I totally get that and will just have to build one for myself because they do look cool. Is there a functional reason?

A 35 inch tire is usually very heavy therefor it puts stress on your rear door that it's mounted to. Teraflex sells a kit that strengths the stock location so you do not have to put a swing out tire carrier

Sent from my phone that Obama doesn't pay for!

Some people have noticed the spot welds breaking on the tailgate with the weight of a 35.

I got one in advance because I hate things breaking when you could have avoided it, because they always break at the worst times...

if you have a 35" on the factory mount I'd go look at some of the mounts out there

get a notepad because there are a lot to choose from!

i wound up going with the Ace one, it's built into the bumper

X2 on the Ace stuff. Great quality, very strong and the rear light provisions are amazing!

I did the same as this man even when I just had stock tires my first mod was a rear bumper with swing arm because I was planning on going with 37s. My first swing arm was the body Armor high clearance bumper with swing arm and it done fine with the stock tire but my 37 was to much for it even tho body armor claims it would have been fine. That being said... dont skimp on quality to save a few pennies, I now have the genright swing arm and it has done great for the most part

I installed the Teraflex HD tire carrier on mine and love it! Cheaper than swing away units and super strong. I can have the tailgate open and stand on the spare tire with no issues what so ever(I weigh 195lbs. too). I can't see why everyone doesn't use these?

I also just installed the Teraflex carrier. So far, I like it a lot.

Great info! Thanks! I will be checking those welds and looking into a carrier. I've only had this tire on there for about 4 weeks, so hopefully i haven't done any damage yet. Really appreciate the info guys!

ok. I'm obviously missing something. I looked at my hinges, tailgate, and the actual carrier itself and can't find any spot welds. The hinges are bolted to the tub and the hinge arms are bolted to the tailgate. Where are the welds that could cause the problem located. Sorry about bugging, but I don't want to have problems.
