The synthetic winch rope has a 10-foot shield

What is this shield?

 

If it's like mine it's just there to position over the line where it might come in contact with rocks, stumps or the like. It adds an extra layer of protection against chafing.

 

Yep what he said... it is to keep rocks and such from cutting the line...

 

What they said. I also keep it up at the beginning (thimble end) of the rope to protect against wind fraying from just driving the Jeep at highway speeds.

I saw many pics here, and I noticed that the shield is installed at the end of the line (outside, near the hook) But in a popular Jeep forum of France, I see that the Jeepers install the shield at the other end (inside near the drum)

A jeeper told me that the shield will protects the portion of the rope against the heat around the drum. Where is the truth?

 

The drum gets hot only when lowering, not when pulling.
