If I don't run the trans thru the radiator and find out everything is fine I'll have a custom radiator built that will not waste space with any trans cooling capacity. I'll have an old school desert cooler built with enough rows. I had to do that to keep my old full size pickups cool when out in the desert.
Or you could knock some holes in your hood. I'm about 2 weeks away from doing that myself. Remember now, mums the word on this. Our anniversary's comin' up and I want to surprise her.

I'd be the LAST person to say anything! But am I misreading this? How is holes in the hood going to be an anniversary surprise? If that's all you do she'll damn sure be surprised; and you'll be in the doghouse!

So what I hear you saying is that it's time for me to get out there find some nice bling, get reservations for for a fancy dinner and there's no way in hell hood louvers, a Tuffy security deck or hydro assist steering is gonna work?

People in this thread were talking about the trans fluid running through the radiator. Someone mentioned it even after it was posted it does not run through the radiator.
So, as a reminder, the trans fluid does not run through the radiator. Bypassing the stock cooler would serve no purpose. Plumb in the aux cooler after the stock cooler.
The factory maintenance manual recommends an aux cooler if overheating is encountered.

I think Joan would hit you upside the head with the hydro assist steering cylinder! Even though I did it 26 years ago I still hear about the time I came home with a new Honda CB900F on our aniversary; which I had forgotten! Sometimes guys can't win.

Good point and good reminder. As long as it doesn't go thru the radiator I see no reason not to use the factroy cooler too. I just have to get around to installing the cooler.

To me it looks like that would make the job easier by just being able to tap into the return line instead of pulling it all apart. I'll be interested in hearing how you cram all of that into the grill.

Good thread. I've learned that our stock ATF is synthetic and trying to change it to something else won't really deal with the heat under there. It looks like adding extra cooling is the way to handle it. Now the question turns into how much do we really need? I'm installing a Moroso heat sink style in front of the radiator. Chuck's putting in a massive self propelled Hi Tek transmission cooler. We're both running Aeroforce OBDII gauges so we should have fairly accurate info to work from on this.

Plus I learned Jeep parts are not acceptable anniversary gifts.

So now I guess I got to take pics when I do it huh? Rest assured I can get it in there!

We'll have to compare trans temps when we're out together some time. But for it to be meaningful we'd have to be in similar gears. The difference between being in 2H or 4H and 4 Lo is astounding. Given identical temps and terrain it can be 65 to 70 degrees. To me that really speaks to a lack of cooling capacity in stock form.

As to gifts; you'll have to ask Mary some time about the rifle that I wanted that I gave "her" for Christmas. I've finally figured out what not to do! Women have memories like elaphants and they never forget all the bone headed stuff we pull.

Jeep parts ARE acceptable anniversary gifts - when she gives them to YOU! I'd be happy to talk to Joan about hydro assist steering if you want.

Darn! Guess we'll have to go out on another trail together. However, I am thinking we live in areas with similar terrain and climate so we should be able to gather some comparable data before that.
