Synthetic Rope Hook Eye UV Protection
I was just reading some synthetic rope information a few moments ago and my "duh" neurons twinged. re: synthetic rope vs. UV rays
The end of the synthetic rope, just where it winds around the hook eye, is exposed on the front bumper 24x7 and could become a weak point in the rope if UV (or other factors) are in effect. The rest is covered along with the winch.
Does anyone know how long UV really takes to weaken synthetic rope? Is this really a concern? I was thinking it's easy to prevent by just wrapping the hook and the last 6" of rope with some black heavy poly or something, and then winding back in it to keep it protected.
Having to re-braid the rope on the trail is not something I would be able to do on the fly. Doesn't look too difficult, but there are GOOD times to do it, and BAD times.
