Default T case shaft play? help

Okay, so i put my new front driveshaft on today and i'm very please with it even though its not a double cardan joint style... heres the issue, i noticed that the splined shaft sticking out of the t-case that feeds the front driveshaft moves in and out a bit. Now driving around for the first time with a front driveshaft in a couple months, i hear a sound coming from the jeep when i drive above 20 mph, it sounds like metal rubbing against metal, not a squeeling but a rubbing noise, almost like what bad rusty brakes sound like... it goes away when i put it in four wheel drive, and comes right back the instant it pops back to 2wd... any advice is much appreciated other than "take it to the dealer"

thanks

I have a tiny amount of play as well on my front t-case output after installing a new front driveshaft. Unfortunately I didn't check the stock configuration for play before removing stock flange. I estimate it is less than 1/16." Everything is torqued properly.

The only noises I heard from the new shaft (I got one from Jim Reel) was because I mistakenly removed the dust ring from the stock pinion flange and installed it on Jim's replacement pinion flange before installing Jim's replacement pinion flange. Jim's flanges are machined such that they do not require the dust rings, and so the dust ring when installed was just loose and would cause noises. I removed that and the noise is gone.

I'd say check that first. Good luck.

Thanks for the input, the fact that you too have the slight play makes me feel a lot better, mine too only moves less that 1/16 of and inch, as for the noise, i called the supplier i baught the shaft from, spoke with one of their shop guys who told me chances are its just the U-joints as they either have an air pocket where grease hasn't found its way to yet and that it will grease up in a few days to a week, or that the caps are just breaking in. I never had to break in u joint caps before, so i don't know about that one, but it seems to make sense that it could be a lack of grease, i did forget to grease them after install , i'm ashamed to admit that but i did... i mean they are greased when you get them, but that kinda like forgetting to put the drain plug back in before adding oil to the motor, haha.. oh well, at least i didn't drive much like that. anyway, i added grease today, the slip joint part on the shaft took a lot as it telescoped out a fair amount when installed as compared to how it was when packed for shipping,

The U joint on the diff hardly took any, but the u joint at the transfer case took a lot for some reason, so, i'm hoping that was the issue,

the guy i talked to also said he installed the same companys shaft on his wifes TJ and it took about a week to break in and quiet up, so i guess we'll see.... in the mean time, i'll just keep the radio on

Okay, so i'm feeling like a total moron as i already stated in my last post i forgot to grease the d shaft after install,,, i took her for a ride today and the sound is 99% gone, another day or two and it should be all good to go. The thing that really made me nervous was the play in the front output shaft, but as one other here, and others off the site have now told me they have the same play, i'm no longer worried... now i'm just stupid, haha
