Ive heard those toyos are really heavy. And im only running a 15x8 alloy rim. Hopefully my calculations are somewhat correct because I dont want to add a huge bumper on the back of my rig

it's not just the weight. You also have to consider leverage

The AEV carrier is a swing away carrier which connects to the frame and takes the load off the door.

I'm with the original poster: I'd like to simply reinforce the tailgate so that it could support additional weight on its own.

Of course, when I say 'simply' I don't mean to assume the solution would be simple.

This would be a good thread to include stock wheel/tire combo weights compared to your upgraded swaps.

My stock rubi spare weighed 72 lbs. New spare weighs 76 lbs.

Adam, I am right there with you.

I have emailed several different aftermarket "fabricators" with our idea/concern.

The funny thing is, that I got the answers I expected. The good ones already have this on the planning table, and the others recommend a new bumper and tire carrier.

( Thanks for not listening to the people who pay your bills)

I find it pretty funny that certain ones won't listen to us.

I guess we'll just have to wait.

New tailgate installed = $1200 or so to have a repair shot replace and install...

Rear ended a tree and had to replace...

I was in the market for a carrier recently, with the same ideas as the op, but I had a different concern. All bumper carriers solve the weak tailgate problem, some tailgate carriers strengthen the hinge points. But the real issue for me wasn't just finding a cairrier that could handle extra weight, it needed to be able to take a hit on the bottom of the tire, or not rip everything apart if I stood it on end. I am not aware of any tailgate strengthening kits that could handle that over time. I think the best bet has got to be a bumper mounted/hinge integrated. Or what I decided on, which is a bodymount, the genright. Mounts to the stock hinge with new bracketry, and pins to a new mount beside the gate, taking all the stress off the gate. I know the idea of a bodymount seems sketchy, but once i saw the brackets i wasnt worried. Evo and orfab's version are pretty wicked awesome too. My 2 cents.
