The mechs are just locked up. Use some 3-1 on the locking mechanism and powdered graphite injected into the button.

I suppose it's possible a hook end of a spring let go. I had this happen on a YJ twice. The afore mentioned fixed it both times. If nothing else, it's a good place to start. Good luck!

Are you asking that the tailgate won't shut or the tailgate will not open anymore?

If the tailgate will not shut, try sticking a screwdriver shaft into the part where the latch (striker) would go into the door. Then make sure the tailgate is unlocked and push the button like you are opening the tailgate and at the same time, pull out on the mechanism. Either the latch will not open or close properly OR the striker (on the body) is misadjusted.

If the tailgate will not open, make sure you have the tailgate unlocked. If nothing happens when you push the button, one of the pieces in the linkage has probably had broken off and you will have to open the tailgate from the inside. You have to remove the black plastic panel and see if you can find what is broken. A second person outside pushing the button would help while you see if the parts are moving correctly inside the door.

The rear doors on a 4 door DO have childproof locking mechanisms so the doors can only be opened from the outside button. The rear tailgate does not have this lockout feature.

Never thought about a frozen mechanism. I live where it doesn't get that cold.

Having that issue with my driver door. Mech is frozen and door won't latch. Fun driving holding the door closed with a rag looped around the handle lol
