Default Teraflex tire carrier installed

I'm finally no longer the guy with the odd sized spare! Thanks to my teraflex hinged tire carrier I installed today. I love it! I know it's a pretty expensive piece of metal, but it works perfect for my needs and opens my options for rear bumpers without worrying about my Duratrac 315 hitching a ride in the back.

Install was fairly easy, but the two bolts on the left side of the hinge were kind of a pain... Had to use the tool provided rather than my socket wrench.

How does the spare get the extra support? It looks like the bracket only supports maybe half of the tire carrier?

That's correct, and I guess time will tell, but putting some pressure on it, it feels very solid with a 315, no movement hardly at all.

It looks like a great product, but I wasn't sure why they stopped the bracket and only went half way around to support the tire. Maybe they calculated half was enough? Right, time will tell. Thanks for the info.

Not trying to high jack your thread

After seeing a few of these installed I still do not see how this actually helps. I suppose the reinforced arms going into the reinforced hinge would help some but I cant see how it would alleviate the problem all together like a bumper/tire carrier combo does.

Any mechanical engineers out there that can shed some light on this?

That's what I like about tf, they supply you with their own tool for those hard to reach spots rather than making the customer cuss and cry about figuring out a way to make it work. I liked the tool they supplied for my read spring isolators.

I'm no engineer, and I'll keep updating as time goes by, but that tire feels solid. Even half bolted to the carrier though should make a difference. The stock tailgate is carrying ALL the load of the tire. That's not much sheet metal keeping the thing stable. The stock hinges carry no direct load from the tire as far as I could tell. It looked to me like the hinges hold the gate on and the gate hold the tire on. When you consider that you aren't compensating for the entire weight of the wheel and tire, but only for the difference between the stock and larger tire, then it makes sense to me that you wouldn't need to bulk up the entire span of the gate. But, we will see. Like I said, seems very solid, and I'll update as to results good or bad over time.

Dont see the need to start another thread so hope you dont mind I add to your post jksooner. I just installed mine also. I dont know about you but the instructions say to install the two outer hinge bolts first then the inside ones. I did it opposite and installed the two inner ones as I could not get them into the holes past the mount itself once I had installed the outer bolts first. Then I installed the outside one. Plus I used the smittybuilt heavy duty carrier as I did not have the original carrier. Just had to modify it some

I am currently using the Smittybuilt Tire Carrier with a 37" tire. I am also considering installing the Terraflex tailgate mount as well. How much modification did you have to do?
