What is bent? The axle tubes. If so, I would just put in a new d30 and have tubes inserted and gussett's and truetrac.

Ok, so lets say I buy a terra d44 for 2,050.00 or a dynatrac pro rock d44 for 2,346.00 what parts would I have to buy, besides gears to be able to run either axel and how much would they cost, not including labor. I have a total of 3,200.00 for this including gears.

right now I have 3:73 gears so I wouldn't need a new carrier

For me, yes, just tubes and C's are bent that I'm sure of. I have a Dana 30 lined up with sleeves and gussets already on it. I could take that and add the Detroit helical gear limited slip to it.

For $3500 you can buy a brand new crate rubi axle with 4.10 gears and lockers including brakes. Just saying.

I didn't want to mess with another factory housing, and was on a budget, so went kinda cheap with my pr44. I don't know if it is still the same, but way back when i got mine, it came with new 'factory' balljoints included in the price of the housing, I did not upgrade to aftermarket bj's. I got it with an ARB, you would need a new open carrier or a full case locker/limited. Mine shipped with alloy inner shafts, my shop re-used the outers/hubs/brakes from my d30. I didn't itemize the individual items, so I don't actually know what the cost of the inner shafts and joints was, but I think that the full set of inner/outer/joints is around $550-600. ish?

So assuming they still include factory bj's, the difference will be carrier/locker, inner shafts, joints. Haven't priced any of it, but $500 sound about right? And it looks like the d44 truetrac is on sale for $415 at summit. Subtract 80 for the open carrier and you end up at what, $835 over the cost of the 30? (assuming I didn't miss any needed parts and came somewhat close on the costs...)

And to add to what dirtman posted.
Front factory housings. (looks like $2678 + shipping for the rubi 44. I 'think' there is the option of either 4.10 or 3.73? Plus gussets/sleeves/truss/whatever)

I imagine you will still go for the D30, just a suggestion to do some research and add all the costs for a side by side comparison.

Northridge sells assembled axles and you can pick your parts. Click here to get a rough idea. The only thing you would need seems to be axle shafts, unless you go with the RCV's.

$3500 for an axle that will just bend? The Rubicon 44 is only better by way if ring and pinion, the rest of the axle sucks balls just like a 30, matter of fact, they share the same bendy tubes and bendy C's. You want to talk about good money spent bad, I can't think of a better example.

You can break anything if you abuse it. If you are breaking a dana 30 housing running 32" tires it would be from driver error.

Well, for a few hundred dollars you can make the housing nearly as strong as a Prorock. The current D44 has beefed up axle shaft joints (started late 2013). So, you get lockers, stronger joints, more splines, etc. If you're bending a housing or C after gussets and sleeves/truss then you need some driving lessons or you run big tires on a heavy rig and need to step up to big boy axles.

And while a Tera housing is stronger than a stock housing, it is the same bendy 1/4" wall thickness, just a 1/2" more diameter. If you can bend a sleeved and gusseted stock housing, you'll bend a Tera housing.

Anyway, other than the easily improved housing, the 44 is far better than the 30.
