Default That's right, another gear question

Hey everyone,

I know, im sorry, i'm another one of those dudes who after reading many threads on gears still doesn't understand the difference.

I have stock gears on my 09 X. I can't afford to re-gear any time soon cuz i don't got the money. I want to run bigger tires. I really want 35", but i'll settle for 33" if the issue of changing gears is THAT important.

I don't wanna run 35" on stock gears if its gonna further decrease the performance of the Jeep. But if its no real change from driving with my stock 31" tires then i'll do it.

I've seen the gear chart a million times, and it says in a manual tranny, with 35" tires, the performance is 1813 (not sure what that number is by the way) and with 31" it is 2047. Is that a real difference in performance for a DD and weekend off-roader?

Please, Jeep gurus out there, I need your advice, it will be much appreciated!!!!

plain and simple, if you go bigger, you will have some power loss if you don't regear. however, being that you have a manual, you might find the loss to be minimal especially if you're running 3.73. if you've got 3.21's, the loss will be considerable.

If you are looking at the same chart I have seen in the 4x4 catalogs and on line then those numbers are theoritically what your engine will be doing RPM wise at 65mph with any given size tire. (Size tire in inches on left, gear ratio across top, where they meet is the RPM for that gear ratio)Also the charts are broken down by color code mostly Red, Green, Yellow with explanations as to how they affect performance, RPM's, etc etc)

Get the 35's. You can live without using 6th until you come up with the money for a re-gear...

I agree....I met quite a few guys at EJS that had 33's that wished they had done 35's...Don't spend a bunch of money on tires you won't be happy with....
