Default 5.13 Manual

I just put ARB's front & rear, with 5.13 gears and riddler covers. Still in break in period.
Stock suspension and tires at this time. No problems so far!

Heres my setup:

08 Sahara
6 speed manual
2.73 txfr case
3.73 gears
rear lsd trac-loc
35in km2 tires
flashpaq set to 87octane

I've decided on 4.88 as opposed to 4.56. I'm hoping the high pinion setup we have will keep the gears from blowing up as compared to the low pinion of previous jeeps.

I will be doing ARB front and rear as well, although the trac-loc is fine, id rather do this install once (excluding any damage/repairs).

So..to get to my question! With the D30 up front, I've looked into a few options, and wanted hear from you with previous experience, or just good advice!

1. get the arb with 27 spline setup and use stock axle shafts
2. get the arb with 27 spline setup and get some chromoly shafts
3. get the arb with 30 spline setup and get some chromoly shafts
4. get the arb with 30 spline setup and get a d44prj with chromoly shafts (not really in the budget..but when is any of this ever in the budget!)

I'm tempted to just go with #1 and when it finally breaks, then put in some chromoly, but then I'm focusing on 27spline for X amount of years...

I definitely would rather have an axle shaft or ujoint fail instead of the gears or locker, no RCV for me at this time based on research I've done here, etc.

I've looked all over for a chart attempting to rate the failure limits of all the various setups (d30 stock, through the chromolors, d44, etc etc) to no avail.

Am I focusing too much on the spline count? Is the stock d30 just a waste of time and will bend/fail too quickly (ie shafts, then gusstes, then xyz... so many upgrades on a losing team....)

I try to tackle obstacles without much skinny pedal.. but stalling and testosterone get in the way of good judgement too often!

Thx in advance!
I am very interested in what you decide to do, I am kinda in the same boat and have pretty much the same setup with the exception that I have an auto.

Default couple other ideas

lets call these #5 and #6.

With all the input here, and research, it looks like the combo of lockers and a d30 is just a timebomb, especially with higher gears.

I have to agree with the dynatrac rep that the constant upgrades for the d30 will eventually equal the pro 44 in cost (not to mention lost time in the garage..and trail / towing bills!). But the price feels too steep at this time.

So, additional options:

#5 4.88 gears, and only a locker in the rear.. leave the front open/bsd. This should allow the d30 to handle the higher gears with stock shafts, etc.

#6 keep stock gears, open in front, lsd in rear, and replace the NV241 2.73:1 with either a NV241OR or atlas 2sp (4.3:1). 4sp seems like itll be end of year till available again..and no idea the $$$.

Thx in advance!

Default D30...........

I have D30 (front) 5.13s /ARB front & rear ,auto trans. I do some pretty good rock crawlin ,so far no problems. But I go slow and pay attention. I thought about going with the CRVs,but too much money in a D30 already. So when I blow it all up !! I'm just going to have to go D60s. My wife will hate me, but my JK will love me !!!!

I opted for a combination of Nos. 5 and 6: an open D30 front (w/factory locked D44 rear), 4.88s which I needed anyway, and an NGV2410R t-case (a priceless upgrade if you do much rock crawling).

I'll admit, however, that's not where I stopped; by Thursday I'll have gusseted, sleeved, Pro Steer'd and RCV'd my Dana 30, but the RCVs are easily resalable and I can use the Pro Steers in a new 44 should I purchase a complete replacement axle from someday.

I don't think it's an intellectually sound argument that investing in a D30 is patently unwise. The only thing I can't put back to stock on my Dana are the gussets (welded on) and they were cheap. I'll have a stout front end, perfectly suitable for my new 35s, and at about half of the cost of a turn-key ProRock 44.

What's not to like?

Way I see it my budget right now affords me upgrading my D30. I have the 5.13s sitting in my garage along with a new carrier and an Aussie locker all for the 30. My local shop is doing my regear for $160 an axle. Given that out the door it will only cost me at most $350 to get these parts put in, thats the plan for now.

My future plans when I upgrade to my stage two build are:

Front axle:
ProRock 44
RCV shafts
Reid knuckles
5.13s
Rock Krawler HD tie rod
ARB locker

Rear axle:
Keep the stock 44 that is already regeared to 5.13s
ARB locker (and possibly 35 spline shafts)

I think your plan for now is pretty rock solid. Build up the 30 within reason and upgrade later. Plus, depending on how you drive the 30 may last alot longer than you expect.
