Tire carrier question. Is tire physically secure?
I'm running a modified aftermarket carrier. Because of backspace issues the tire is actually held by the rubber against the carrier frame. And three lug nuts hold the tire on. Because there isn't metal to metal contact this way I can't get the nuts tightened well, and there is a fair bit of deformity where the tire contacts the carrier.
So two questions really.
Are the bolts likely to work loose? Should I see if I can find a spacer?
Will the long term deformity damage my sidewall?
Thanks

I think he means tire rubber not bump stop rubber...cheapest way would be to add a stack of washers to each stud behind the wheel until the tire just kisses the carriers frame, snug but not deformed. Then either leave it be or find a spacer the thickness of the washer stack

Yes that's right. I do mean the tire. I'm on the lookout for a single spacer but that washer idea is a good one. I'll still be a bit worried about the bolts shearing but that sounds at least a bit better.

Cut some pipe into spacers
