Default Tire carrier WITHOUT bumper?

I run my 4 door JK without a rear bumper because it gives maximal clerance and doesn't really need one anyway. My stock rear tire carrier has a crack on it and holds my 35x10.5x16 SSR at an angle.

Does anyone make a tire carrier without bumper besides OR-FAB? Northridge is selling this carrier for $530, but for $130 less, I can get the Rancho bumper / tire carrier for $399 from Quadratec.

At these prices and the fact that I don't want a rear bumer, I'm thining to just have a friend fab me up something.

Thanks for any help!

I think you should maybe find out how much it is to have something fab for you. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other tire carrier without the bumper.

Hanson Offroad has one for $499. http://www.hansonoffroad.com/product...roducts_id=177

JK Tire Carrier – This unique design is a direct replacement for the stock tire carrier. It is designed to accommodate a 35” tire without putting any additional stress on the tailgate. Constructed of 1 ½” square .120 wall tubing and a 3/16” gauge steel center. The steel center bolts to the tailgate using factory holes and a gusset bolts to the factory hinges. This design relieves the stress from the tailgate and spreads the load out to the hinges, allowing the unit to carry a larger tire. Black semi-gloss powder coat finish.

Thanks Robar! That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for! I wanted something a bit stronger that swings with the door and the Hanson model looks like it does that perfectly.

What does the law say about the off/on rear bumper? Is it legal to run with it off? Will it pass insp.?

My friend in VT has been running it this way for over a year. Before removing the bumper a few weeks ago, I had the stuck bumper trimmed down to the frame rails, so it was justlike a flimsy cover over the frame rail holes on the end. This passed inspection without a problem. It might depend on where you have it inspected. I've also had cops drive behind me without the bumper and I didn't get pulled over.

My rear bumper kept me from rolling once and has saved me from countless $$$ in body damage coming off of tall shelves.
